Croatia Travel Recap

As I’m currently *attempting* to unpack, I’m also getting my wisdom teeth out later in the afternoon today. Writing this blogpost is a good way to distract myself from my growling stomach! If you didn’t know, you are not allowed to eat before wisdom teeth surgery because you are put under anesthesia. If you follow me on Instagram (@sunshinestatejulia) you would know that I spent 25 days in Europe! On my family’s crazy adventure, we visited various islands and small towns of Croatia, Prague, Santorini, and Athens. Although I would have loved to be writing these posts during my days on the trip, we were so busy and having such a great time that I wanted to enjoy the moment. Speaking of which, I didn’t post nearly as much on the blog or Instagram. As much as I wanted to keep everyone updated, I also wanted to enjoy the experience rather than feeling like I had to be taking photos all the time as well as posting on social media. In this post, I will be hitting the highlights of our journey through Croatia! Enjoy this travel post!Screen Shot 2018-07-27 at 10.39.04 AM.png

This year, we went on another Backroads multi-sport trip which are incredible. If your family loves adventure and intense biking, I would 110% recommend going on one of these trips. My family and I have met amazing people from around the world through these trips and look forward to them each time we plan one! Last year’s Backroads trip we only did biking through the Loire Valley. This year was multi-sport, meaning biking, hiking, and snorkeling. Everyday it was a change of pace. Backroads owns a double decker boat which brought us to different islands. One of the days, we kayaked to different islands where we could stop and snorkel, learn some history, and eventually paddle our way to the lunch destination. The most memorable part of island hopping for me was jumping off the double decker boat with our new friends! Enjoy the video of me jumping off for the first time into the cold water 😉

The trips meeting point was in Split, Croatia. We had one day to explore the city before descending on our biking trip. We had a five hour walking tour in the morning and explored old sites and churches. The city was very pretty with it’s rustic walls and narrow streets. Before heading on our Europe trip, I researched some restaurants in each location. I had come across a rolled ice-cream shop called Bobic so we decided to check it out! The rolls of ice cream were delicious and we loved watching the employees roll up the ice cream into tight spirals.

Out of the five days on the Backroads trip, we biked three days. Each day the milage ranged from 28-41 miles. It was exhausting going up the mountains and hills, but it was a super rewarding feeling getting up that last bit of the hill, even when you thought you may never make it. Not to sound cheesy, but it made me feel like I could conquer the world. By the end of each day, my thighs felt so heavy, numb, and brick-like. Every year I forget how much I love biking; too bad that Florida doesn’t have hills! Along the bike route, there were so many beautiful views overlooking the bright blue water. As we rode along, we passed many purple lavender fields which smelled incredible.

We ended the biking tour in Dubrovnik, which is a beautiful and historic walled city. After saying goodbye to the other families on the tour and our leaders, we spent one more day in Dubrovnik before jetting off to Prague, Czech Republic. That night we had dinner with another family who we met on the trip and loved spending time with! We went to this super cool bar which was inside a natural cave! Afterwards we had an amazing meal at a beautiful outdoor restaurant which we saw one of the prettiest sunsets I have ever seen. On that same note, seeing all these sunsets on our trip made me realize how lucky I am to be able to see jaw dropping sunsets right off my house in Florida.

My family’s time in Croatia was wonderful and I enjoyed every moment of it. The people and locals were so friendly, the food was delicious, and the views were stunning. Thanks for reading this post and stay tuned for my Czech Republic, Santorini, and Athens recap!
